Job No. B-18 Title: Basic Survey and Fish Inventory of the San Antonio River in Region 8-B. Period Covered: _January 1 to December 31, 1961 Objectives: To determine the physical, chemical and ecological conditions and the relative numbers of fish species present in the lower portions of the San Antonio River, lying within Wilson, Karnes,Goliad and Refugio Counties. Techniques Used: Five and one-half man-days were spent making two gill net collections near Goliad, Findings: Two experimental gill nets were set overnight on May 17 in the San Antonio River on the Calhoun Ranch about 15 miles west of Goliad.. The river was about 2 feet below normal elevation, flowing steadily, with an average depth of about 4 feet and an average width of about 50 feet. Many willow leaves fouled the nets, dragging them against the bank. Only three longnose gar were taken in one net, no fish in the other. Additional work on this job was again prevented by weather conditions and work on other jobs. Other planned trips during the fall were cancelled when both outboard motors broke down. Recommendations: The job should be completed in the next segment. Suitable boat landings and still water pools will need to be found and other gear, possibly hoop nets, will have to be tried in the running water. Prepared by Alvin Flury Approved by Vi Ve ptow, A aot ‘Project Leader Date December 22,1961
