Characters
Elongate and polygonal in cross section, with a moderately short snout and a deeply forked caudal fin. Body depth at dorsal fin origin is 8.3% to 13.4%, body depth at caudal peduncle is 4.3% to 5.6%, head length is 28.5% to 32.4%, snout length is 8.7% to 11.2%, and maxillary length is 5.2% to 6.6% of SL. Maxillae do not meet anteriorly. Palatine and head of vomer bear small, closely spaced, needlelike teeth in continuous band on anterior roof of mouth. No teeth occur in premaxilla, maxilla, or dentaries. Lower limb of first gill arch has six or seven gill rakers. Branchiostegal rays number 5. Tongue has eight large, recurved teeth along anterior and lateral margins. Pectoral fin is on ventrolateral aspect of trunk and possesses 17 to 18 rays. Dorsal fin originates anterior to pelvic fin and has 11 rays. Pelvic fin has 13 to 14 rays. Anal fin is located below adipose fin and has 10 to 11 rays. Scales are deciduous and lack spines. Lateral line scales do not extend onto caudal fin. Swim bladder lacks external silvery pigment.
Upper quarter of body is dark brown with black mid-dorsal stripe. Ventral aspect of body is light with large, dark chromatophores forming band midventrally from isthmus to vent. Some specimens lack ventral pigment and dark color shows through ventral musculature.
