Body depth at dorsal fin origin 9.7% to 15.7%, body depth at caudal peduncle 5.2% to 6.5%, head length 26.1% to 32%, snout length 8.5% to 10.6%, maxillary length 4.2% to 6.1% of SL. Maxillae do not meet anteriorly. Palatine and head of vomer with small, closely spaced, needlelike teeth in continuous band. No teeth on premaxilla, maxilla, or dentaries. Lower limb of first gill arch with six or seven gill rakers. Branchiostegal rays number 5. Tongue with five to nine stout, recurved teeth on anterior and lateral margins. Pectoral fin on ventrolateral aspect of body with 18 to 21 rays. Dorsal fin originates anterior to pelvic fin with 11 to 12 rays. Pelvic fin with 12 to 15 rays. Anal fin located below adipose fin with 11 to 15 rays. Scales deciduous and lack spines. Lateral line scales do not extend onto caudal fin. Swim bladder covered externally with silvery pigment. Vertebrae number 47 to 51.
Color is translucent to silvery with ventral two-thirds of body light brown. Brown band often runs above lateral line, and brown chromatophores often occur on throat. Peritoneum is black. Young specimens have a row of eight to nine dark blotches along upper one-third of body.
Distribution
Western North Atlantic from Nova Scotia to Venezuela (to mouth of Orinoco River), including the entire Gulf of Mexico, and off Cuba and Brazil.
Habitat Associations
Depth of capture ranges from 95 to 365 m, usually associated with mud bottoms at temperatures from 8.9°C to 15°C.

Found on soft bottoms.
