Characters
Moderately elongate and moderately slender; body depth 16% to 21% and head length 25% to 30% of SL; snout length 22% to 30% and eye diameter 16% to 20% of head length; two nares on each side of snout; premaxilla with about six rather small teeth, maxilla lacks teeth, and lower jaw with two fangs anteriorly fitting into grooves in upper jaw, followed by progressively smaller teeth; palatine with small, depressible teeth; chin barbel 30% to 60% of SL with slight swelling at tip; pectoral fin with 7 to 10, dorsal fin with 21 to 26, pelvic fin with 6, and anal fin with 26 to 32 rays; IP number 8, PV number 14 to 16, and VAV number 15 to 17; OV number 16, VAL number 15 or 16, and AC number 10 or 11; three pairs of photophores between last two pairs of IP; So crescent-shaped, and Po slightly elongate; row of small luminous spots and patches extends from eye to postorbital organ; head and body covered with numerous minute light organs.

Eastern seaboard of the United States to Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea
