Characters
Moderately elongate and moderately slender, with enlarged, fanglike teeth in the jaws and a moderately long, slender chin barbel. Snout is not upturned at tip. Chin barbel is about one-half head length. Tip of barbel is slightly swollen in large specimens but lacks swelling in small specimens. Maxillary teeth are comb-like, closely spaced, and slanted posteriorly. Gill rakers are replaced by 15 to 19 groups of teeth. Vomer teeth are weakly developed or absent, and palatine teeth number two to seven. Dorsal fin origin is distinctly posterior to insertion of pelvic fin, and distance from dorsal fin origin to caudal fin base is 39% to 51% of SL. Dorsal fin has 18 to 21 rays, and anal fin has 13 to 15 rays. Ventral adipose fin is located anterior to anus. Photophores are small and not broken into small groups, and those of ventral row form a U-shaped curve near base of pectoral fin. IP number 8 to 10, PV number 12 to 15, and VAV number 17 to 20. OV number 12 to 15, and VAL number 19 to 22. AC number 9 to 11. Po organ is small and located near orbital margin.
Color is dark. Luminous patches are developed on operculum and nostrils, and occasionally on dorsum between head and dorsal fin.
