Characters
Moderately elongate, with anus anterior to midlength and with a slender, attenuated tail. Snout projects beyond lower jaw. Lower lip has flange, and upper lip has rudimentary or no flange. Anterior nostril is tubular and near tip of snout. Posterior nostril is elliptical and located in front of midheight of eye. Snout is 21% to 27%, eye is 14% to 20%, and mouth length is 29% to 36% of head length. Head length is 37% to 49%, predorsal length is 43% to 65%, and preanal length is 34% to 40% of TL. Jaw teeth are moderately small and in narrow bands, narrowing posteriorly, with outer teeth slightly larger than inner teeth. Intermaxillary teeth are in three or four series forming triangular patch. Vomerine tooth patch is round, with slightly larger median series. Head pores along upper jaw, second and third supraorbital pores, and third preopercular-mandibular pores are enlarged. Pores on head number five infraorbital, three supraorbital, and one supratemporal. Branchiostegal rays number 10 or 11, pectoral fin rays number 11 to 14, and lateral line pores to anus number 25 to 36. Total vertebrae number 120 to 145, predorsal vertebrae number 9 to 13, preanal vertebrae number 29 to 36, and precaudal vertebrae number 37 to 40.
Color is brown or yellowish brown to gray.
Distribution
Western North Atlantic from Georgia to the Guianas, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.
