Characters

Moderately elongate, with anus at about anterior one-third of length and with a slender, attenuated tail. Snout projects beyond lower jaw. Lower lip has flange, and upper lip has rudimentary or no flange. Anterior nostril is tubular and near tip of snout. Posterior nostril is elliptical and located in front of upper margin of eye. Snout is 23% to 30%, eye is 14% to 20%, and mouth length is 33% to 43% of head length. Head length is 38% to 46%, predorsal length is 42% to 48%, and preanal length is 32% to 38% of TL. Jaw teeth are moderately large and in narrow bands, tapering posteriorly, with outer teeth larger than inner teeth. Intermaxillary teeth are in three transverse rows and are separated from maxillary and vomerine teeth. Vomerine tooth patch is round, with one or two median teeth enlarged. Head pores along upper jaw, second and third supraorbital pores, and third preopercular-mandibular pores are enlarged. Pores on head number five to eight infraorbital, three to six supraorbital, and one to three supratemporal. Branchiostegal rays number 9, pectoral fin rays number 15 to 18, and lateral line pores to anus number 33 to 38. Total vertebrae number 168 to 176, predorsal vertebrae number 10 to 12, preanal vertebrae number 40 to 47, and precaudal vertebrae number 47 to 51.
Color is brown to grayish brown, with vertical fins edged in black posteriorly and stomach and intestine black.

Distribution

Western North Atlantic from the eastern Gulf of Mexico to the mouth of the Amazon River, including the Bahamas and the West Indies.
In the Gulf of Mexico it occurs off the east coast of Mexico and the west coast of Yucatan.

Depth range: 101 to 503 m

Biology

Maximum known size is 462 mm TL
