Elongate and attenuated body; large, terminal mouth; relatively small eyes; closely spaced dorsal fins; blunt and concave snout; jaws extend beyond posterior margin of orbit; premaxilla has short, ascending process; head is cavernous and 15% to 20% of TL; snout length is 28% to 33%, orbit is 17% to 21%, premaxilla is 51% to 55%, and body depth at dorsal fin origin is 73% to 95% of head length; chin barbel absent; jaw teeth small, recurved, and depressible; gill rakers lathlike, 4 to 6 on epibranch and 19 to 22 on lower limb of first arch; pectoral fin has 15 to 17 rays; first dorsal fin has 9 to 11 rays; pelvic fin has 9 or 10 relatively short rays; scales lack spinules; abdominal area lacks naked area and light organ; swim bladder has two retia mirabilia and lacks drumming muscles.
