Body depth is 11.4% to 16%, head length is 22.4% to 23.1%, snout length is 6.6% to 7.5%, and anal fin base is 12.1% to 14.4% of SL. Teeth in jaws consist of denticles, except symphyses of both jaws lack teeth. Vomer and palatine have patches of similar teeth. Eye is broad, flat, dorsally directed, vestigial, and covered with skin. Branchiostegal rays number 15 to 17. Gill rakers on first arch consist of 6 platelike basal ossifications on epibranch, 1 stout gill raker in corner, and 12 to 14 platelike basal ossifications on lower limb. Pectoral fin is of moderate length and has 12 or 13 rays. Dorsal fin originates posterior to insertion of pelvic fin and has 12 or 13 rays. Pelvic fin is subthoracic and consists of 8 rays. Anal fin originates posterior to insertion of dorsal fin and has 12 to 14 rays. Dorsal adipose fin is absent. Caudal fin is forked, and upper and lower lobes are of equal length. Scales are present on body; cheeks, sides, and top of head; and base of caudal fin. Lateral line scales number 64 or 65. Vertebrae number 63 or 64.

Biology
Food consists of benthic mysid shrimps and copepods. Larvae occur at the surface at night.
Maximum known size is 280 mm SL
Benthic at 692-1420 m (Ref. 58302). Adults bathybenthic on continental slope and rise at temperatures generally warmer than 4°C while larvae are pelagic near the surface. Feeds on mysids and decapods. Synchronously hermaphroditic (Ref. 3590). Minimum depth from Ref. 58018.
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC), assessed 2013-05-21. Resilience: Very low (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
