Characters
Body shape: Elongated. Can be diagnosed by the having the following characters: bright red fins throughout life; 2 rows of pharyngeal teeth (usually 1,4-4,1 or 2,4-4,1); black vertical bar near base of caudal fin in breeding males; 49-63 lateral scales; 36-49 scales around body at dorsal fin origin; 23-30 rakers on 1st gill arch; and pectoral fin with 15-16 rays (Ref. 86798).
Distribution
North America: Red, Ouachita and lower Arkansas drainages in central Arkansas to eastern Oklahama, USA.
Habitat Associations
Freshwater. benthopelagic.
Biology
Inhabits rocky riffles, runs and sometimes pools of headwaters, creeks, and small rivers (Ref. 86798).
Max length: 17.0 cm TL.
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC), assessed 2011-10-25. Resilience: Medium (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
