Characters

Body shape: short and / or deep. Description: Overall color is golden brown to orange, becoming bright orange ventrally. Some with bluish narrow band or spots along the margin of the dorsal and anal fins (Ref. 4858). Body depth 2.0-2.3 in SL. Scales longitudinal series 40-45 (Ref. 90102). Striking features: none.

Distribution

Western Pacific: Tanabe Bay, southern Japan to the southwestern tip of Taiwan and the Philippines.

Habitat Associations

Marine. reef-associated. depth range 6-30 m.

Biology

Inhabits seaward (Ref. 9710), rocky reefs and rubble areas, especially where algal growth is extensive (Ref. 47838). Solitary or in small groups (Ref. 47838). Has been reared in captivity (Ref. 35414).
Max length: 10.0 cm TL.
Reproductive mode: protogyny; fertilization: external; nonguarders (open water/substratum egg scatterers); parental care: none. Bi-directional sex change has been confirmed for this species (Ref. 103751).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC), assessed 2009-10-09. Resilience: High (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
