Characters

Body shape: short and / or deep. Description: Bright orange-red with a vertical elongate black blotch and 4 - 5 bars on the sides; posterior part of the dorsal and anal fins with alternating short purple-blue and black bands (Ref. 1602). Specimens from the Marquesas lack the vertical black bars (Ref. 48391). Body depth 1.7-2.0 in SL. Scales longitudinal series 44-47 (Ref. 90102). Striking features: none.

Distribution

Pacific Ocean: mainly in tropical waters.

Habitat Associations

Brackish, marine. reef-associated. depth range 0-60 m. Found in: coral reefs.

Biology

Found in clear lagoon and seaward reefs from the lower surge zone to a depth of 57 m (Ref. 1602). Benthopelagic (Ref. 58302). Secretive and stays near shelter (Ref. 1602). Has been reared in captivity (Ref. 35409). Feeds on algae. Forms harems of 3-7 individuals. Frequently exported through the aquarium trade (Ref. 48391). Minimum depth reported taken from Ref. 128797.
Max length: 15.0 cm TL.
