Tropical to subtropical waters; daytime depths range from 425 to 1,100 m, nighttime depths mainly range from near the surface to 200 m

Biology

Maximum known size is 55 mm SL for males and 70 mm SL for females; life span is approximately one year
Females mature in six months at about 55 mm SL; fecundity ranges from 3,300 to 13,000 eggs and increases with body size; spawning occurs about every seven days for about three months
Oceanic species found between 700 and 1,500 m during the day; between 20 and 200 m at night (Ref. 4775) with maximum abundance between 50 and 100 m (Ref. 47377). Size stratification with depth both day and night (Ref. 4775). Small juveniles (1.5-1.9 cm) are apparently non-migratory. Known to feed on zooplankton but appears to be adapted for occasional herbivory (Ref. 28809).
