Characters

Elongate, slender, and compressed posteriorly, with a moderately large head, dorsal and anal fin bases not elevated, and posterior lateral line pores with moderate lappets or flaps. Dorsal profile of head is convex, and snout is acute. Jaw teeth are short, close-set, and in indistinct diagonal rows. Vomerine tooth patch is round and dome shaped. Palatine teeth are present. Ventral midline of gill arches has single, moderately long, broad, and slightly dumbbell-shaped tooth patch (copular tooth plate). Eye is very small and lacks lens. Three and one-half gill arches are present, with small filaments on fourth. First gill arch has tooth plates with small granular teeth. Pectoral fin has 16, dorsal fin has 16 to 19, and anal fin has 16 to 19 rays. Lateral line consists of broad tube pierced by 14 to 19 pores. Posterior pores have lappets or flaps covering about two-thirds of pore. Cavernous tissue is present around anus and on either side of first five anal fin rays.
Color is blackish brown in preservative.
