Bony tubercle projecting from anterior section of maxilla; several spines projecting from upper and lower margins of caudal peduncle; lachrymal bone not notched; jaw teeth conical, in 2 or 3 rows; preopercular margin finely serrated; gill rakers on first arch long and slender, 8 or 9 on upper limb and 22 to 25 on lower limb; measurements (% SL): head length 27%–32%, snout length 6%–8%, eye diameter 8%–9%, upper jaw length 9%–10%, pectoral fin length 25%–30%, body depth 34%–41%; pectoral fin rays 18 to 20; dorsal fin XII, 12; anal fin rays 11 to 13; caudal fin deeply forked; lateral line scales 19 or 20
