Characters
Moderately elongate and moderately slender, with semitubular eyes and a very long, saberlike tooth in each palatine. Snout is high, angular, and vertical anteriorly. Body depth at anal fin origin is 14.4% to 21%, head length is 19.6% to 24.3%, and interorbital width is 3.2% to 4.7% of SL. Teeth in jaws and palatine are not barbed. Anteriormost palatine tooth is 7.1% to 10% of SL. Teeth in lower jaw are uniserial. Eye is directed dorsolaterally, and horizontal eye diameter is about equal to interorbital width. Aperture diameter of adipose eyelid is slightly greater than eye lens diameter. Pectoral fin rays number 11 to 13. Dorsal fin originates anterior to pelvic fin base and has 10 to 13 rays. Anal fin originates posterior to dorsal fin base and has 26 to 30 rays. Frontal canal commissure has six pores. Vertebrae number 48 to 50. Luminous tissue is associated with ventral wall of pyloric caecae and intestine.
Color is dark brown on head, body, and fins, with brassy green iridescent layers along flank, between eyes, and on cheeks. White glistening spot is located on side of eye.
Distribution
Off the east coast of the United States, the Bahamas, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, and off the coast of South America.

Habitat Associations
Subtropical to warm temperate seas, generally below 500 m for adults, between 100 and 400 m for juveniles and adults, and between 50 and 125 m for larvae.
Biology
Food consists of squids and fishes.
Maximum known size is 185 mm SL.
Oceanic and mesopelagic (Ref. 7300, 58302). Feeds on fish and sepia by preferring the latter (Ref. 47377).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC), assessed 2015-07-31.
