Habitat Associations

Freshwater. pelagic. Found in: streams.

Biology

Adults inhabit hill streams up to an elevation of 300 m (Ref. 4832). Found in shaded, mid-hill clear waters with pebble or gravel substrates (Ref. 11966). They occur in schools at the surface in small high-gradient upland streams (Ref. 12693). They feed mainly on exogenous insects (Ref. 12693) and also on worms and crustaceans (Ref. 7020). Not seen in markets, but popular in aquarium trade (Ref. 12693, 44325). Aquarium keeping: in groups of 5 or more individuals; minimum aquarium size 100 cm (Ref. 51539).
Max length: 15.0 cm TL.
Reproductive mode: dioecism; fertilization: external; nonguarders (open water/substratum egg scatterers); parental care: none. The fish spawn several times with small intervalls releasing 5-20 eggs each time (Ref. 1672). A prolific species laying over 1000 eggs (Ref. 7020).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC), assessed 2010-01-22. Resilience: Medium (Fec=300-1,000).
