Moderately slender and compressed; large mouth; anal fin base slightly longer than dorsal fin base; snout blunt; jaws extend about one eye diameter beyond posterior orbit margin; maxilla not expanded posteriorly; head 27.5% to 30.5% of SL; operculum tapers to acute angle just below PLO; gill rakers number 20 to 23; dorsal fin originates over pelvic fin base and has 14 to 16 rays; pectoral fin extends to pelvic fin base and has 11 or 12 rays; anal fin originates posterior to dorsal fin base and has 15 to 17 rays; Dn small, dorsolateral to nasal rosette, directed anterolaterally, and extends ventrally to meet attenuated section of Vn; Vn smaller than or equal in size to Dn (males) or larger than Dn (females) and fails to reach anterior margin of pupil; PVOi, PVO, and VO in straight line; PLO closer to lateral line than to pectoral fin base; five PO present, and PO elevated; VLO midway between lateral line and pelvic fin base; five VO present, with VO1-2 and VO3 progressively elevated; SAO form straight or nearly straight line, with SAO1 posterior to VO5, and SAO3 over or slightly behind anal fin origin and in contact with lateral line; Pol in contact with lateral line; AOa number six to eight, with first and last elevated; AOp number four to seven and are behind anal fin base; four Prc form arc, with Prc4 about 1.5 times its diameter below lateral line; large luminous scale located at PLO

Tropical waters; daytime depths range from 325 to 750 m, and nighttime depths range from 15 to 150 m
Biology
Maximum known size is 60 mm SL
Maturity is reached at about 40 mm SL
Meso- and benthopelagic (Ref. 58302). Pseudoceanic, at 325-750 m by day and nyctoepipelagic at surface to 125 m at night (with maximum abundance at 100 m) (Ref. 4479). Lipid content is 8.7 % in fresh body weight and wax ester is 1.7 in total lipids (Ref. 9193). Often appears with sergestid shrimp Sergia spp., marine hatchetfishes Argyropelecus spp. and Polyipnus spp. (Ref 39633).
Specimens reach sexual maturity at a length of 4 cm (Ref. 47377).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC), assessed 2012-07-10. Resilience: High (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
