Moderately slender and compressed; large mouth; dorsal and anal fin bases about equal in length; snout blunt; jaws extend 0.9 to 1.2 times eye diameter beyond posterior margin of orbit; maxilla not expanded posteriorly; head 27.5% to 30.5% of SL; posterior margin of operculum tapers to acute angle just below PLO; gill rakers number 16 to 19; dorsal fin originates over or slightly anterior to pelvic fin base and has 17 rays; pectoral fin extends beyond PO4 and has 11 or 12 rays; anal fin originates anterior to end of dorsal fin base and has 17 or 18 rays; Dn rounded, about one-half diameter of eye, and directed forward; Vn extends along anterior and anteroventral border of orbit, and dorsally is in contact with Dn; PVO1, PVO2, and PO in straight line; PLO midway between lateral line and pectoral fin base; five PO present, and PO4 elevated; VLO closer to lateral line than to pelvic fin base; five VO present, with VO1, VO2, and VO3 progressively elevated; SAO form straight line, with SAO1 posterior to VO5, and SAO3 above or posterior to anal fin origin and within its diameter of lateral line; Pol within its diameter of lateral line; AOa number seven or eight, and first and last elevated; AOp number four to six, and first is over but usually behind anal fin base; four Prc form arc, with Prc 1.5 to 3 times its diameter below lateral line; large luminous scale located at PLO

Habitat Associations
Tropical waters; daytime depths range from 425 to 750 m, and nighttime depths range from 40 to 550 m
Biology
Maximum known size is 115 mm SL
Maturity is reached at about 90 to 100 mm SL
Oceanic and mesopelagic, found between 425-750 m during the day and between 40-550 m at night (most abundant below 200 m at night) (Ref. 4066, 4775). There is size stratification with depth both day and night (Ref. 4775).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC), assessed 2012-07-10. Resilience: Medium (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
