Moderately slender and compressed; large mouth; anal fin base slightly longer than dorsal fin base; snout moderately blunt; jaws extend 1.1 to 1.2 times eye diameter beyond posterior orbital margin; maxilla not expanded posteriorly; head 32% to 34% of SL; posterior opercular margin tapers to angle slightly above PLO; gill rakers number 23 to 26; dorsal fin originates slightly posterior to pelvic fin base and has 13 or 14 rays; pectoral fin extends nearly to pelvic fin base and has 11 or 12 rays; anal fin originates slightly posterior to dorsal fin base and has 15 rays; Dn small, oblong, and directed anteriorly; Vn large, elliptical, on ventral margin of orbit, and connected by strand of dark tissue to Dn; PVO1 and PVO2, and POi are in straight line, with PVO2 anterior to pectoral fin base; PLO closer to pectoral fin base than to lateral line; five PO present, with PO4 elevated; VLO midway between lateral line and pelvic fin base; five VO present, with VO2, VO3, and VO5 progressively elevated; SAO form straight to nearly straight line, with SAO1 behind and about on same level as VO5, and SAO3 over anal fin base and 2 to 2.5 times its diameter below lateral line; Pol about 1.5 times its diameter below lateral line; AOa number five or six, and first and last are elevated; AOp number four or five and are posterior to anal fin base; four Prc form arc, with Prc4 2 times its diameter below lateral line; small luminous scale located at PLO

Southeastern Florida to Venezuela, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea
Habitat Associations
Tropical waters of the Atlantic and western Pacific Oceans; daytime depths range from 325 to 850 m, and nighttime depths range from 40 to 225 m
Biology
Maximum known size is 80 mm SL
Maturity is reached at about 63 mm SL
High-oceanic, found between 325-850 m during the day (most abundant at 400-500 m) and between 40-225 m at night (most abundant 100 m) (Ref. 4479). Mesopelagic (Ref. 5951, 75154).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC), assessed 2012-07-10. Resilience: High (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
