Moderately slender and compressed; short mouth; anal fin base longer than dorsal fin base; snout moderately blunt; jaws extend to posterior margin of orbit; maxilla expanded posteriorly; head length 32% to 35% of SL; posterior margin of operculum convex dorsally and straight to slightly concave ventrally; gill rakers 12 to 14; dorsal fin originates posterior to pelvic fin base with 11 or 12 rays; pectoral fin extends to about SAO with 12 or 13 rays; anal fin originates posterior to dorsal fin base with 15 or 16 rays; Dn present; PVOx and PVO horizontal to nearly horizontal; PLO about midway between lateral line and pectoral fin base or higher; five PO present and on same level; VLO midway between lateral line and pelvic fin base; four VO present, with VO3 in line with SAOx and SAO3; SAO2 behind line connecting VO3, SAO1 and SAO3 and in contact with lateral line; Pol in contact with lateral line; AOa number five to seven, and AOp number two to four, with first occasionally over anal fin base; two Prc present, with Prc2 slightly higher than Prc1 and separated from Prcx by distance equal to distance between last AOp and Prc1

Size at maturity about 20 mm SL
Oceanic, epipelagic to mesopelagic (Ref. 4066, 58302), found between 400-930 m during the day and between 18-1,050 m at night (with maximum abundance at 50-100 m and 500-700 m at night) (Ref. 4479). Larvae and juveniles non-migratory at least near the Canary Islands (Ref. 4479). Oviparous, with planktonic eggs and larvae (Ref. 31442). Minimum depth from Ref. 58018.
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC), assessed 2012-07-10. Resilience: High (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
