Characters

Moderately stout, with a fleshy, papillose snout, relatively large circular eyes, and a posteriorly located anus. Snout is slightly tapered anteriorly and overhangs lower jaw. Eye is covered by skin. Teeth are lacking in premaxilla, and maxillary and dentary teeth are very small and arranged in many irregular rows. Vomer has four large compound teeth. Gill openings are crescentic and about equal to diameter of eye. Dorsal fin originates posterior to pectoral fin base. Anus is located less than 1.5 head lengths posterior to gill slits. Head pores number five infraorbital, three supraorbital, and six preoperculomandibular. Snout length is 31% to 39% and lower jaw length is 48% to 56% of head length. Head length is 12% to 15%, predorsal length is 17% to 20%, preanal length is 26% to 33%, and body depth is 4.8% to 8.6% of TL. Total vertebrae number 127 to 134.
Color in preservative is brown, with head and dorsal aspect of body slightly lighter than remainder of body. Pectoral, dorsal, and anal fins are pale.
