Rather deep bodied; lachrymal bone and preoperculum strongly serrated; dorsal fin deeply notched; maxilla extends slightly beyond anterior margin of eye; gill rakers on first arch very short, 13-17 (usually 15) on lower limb; head length 29%-39% SL, snout length 8%-11% SL, eye diameter 8%-12% SL, last dorsal fin spine length 12%-14% SL, pelvic fin length 26%-30% SL, second anal fin spine length 21%-32% SL, body depth 44%-53% SL, caudal peduncle depth 13%-14% SL; pectoral fin with 16 or 17 rays; dorsal fin with IX, 10, second spine as long as head; anal fin with III, 8 (juveniles may have II, 9), second spine very stout; body covered with large cycloid scales; head scaled anteriorly to near anterior margin of eye; pored lateral line scales 32-38 (usually 34-36)

Biology
Maximum known size is 400 mm TL
Inhabits shallow coastal waters and common in brackish waters (Ref. 36880), mostly over mud bottoms in mangrove-lined creeks and lagoons (Ref. 3722); often entering a considerable distance into freshwaters (Ref. 36880). Feeds on aquatic insects, crustaceans, micro-bivalves and detritus (Ref. 36880). Marketed fresh; processed into fishmeal (Ref. 3722).
Reproductive mode: dioecism; fertilization: external; nonguarders (open water/substratum egg scatterers); parental care: none. Oviparous (Ref. 41568).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC), assessed 2010-03-01. Resilience: Medium (K=0.17-0.32).
