Characters

Elongate and very slender, with a long, tapering, protrusible snout; a moderately long chin barbel bearing a long and slender terminal bulb; and abdominal pelvic fins. Body depth is 8.3% and head length is 11.6% of SL. Premaxilla has 7 to 15 teeth. Lower jaw has 9 or 10 teeth. Chin barbel is 46% to 49% of SL. Barbel has slender stem and single, large, elongate terminal barbel with constriction before tip. Bulb is 33% to 35% of SL and bears simple, minute terminal filament. Deep ventral groove on belly is absent. Pectoral fin consists of 2 free rays. Dorsal fin has 23 or 24 rays, and anal fin has 36 or 37 rays. Pelvic fin has 7 rays. IP number 7, PV number 33 or 34, and VAV number 15 or 16. OV number 33, VAL number 16 or 17, and AC number 17 or 18. Preorbital and suborbital luminous organs are absent. Po is present. Vertebrae number 65 to 67.
Color is black. Barbel stem is darkly pigmented, but external chevron-shaped or roundish striated areas on stem are not pigmented.

Distribution

Western Atlantic from the Straits of Florida and the northern Gulf of Mexico.

Habitat Associations

Between the surface and 400 m in nonclosing nets.

Biology

Maximum known size is 95 mm SL.
Reproductive mode: dioecism; fertilization: external; nonguarders (open water/substratum egg scatterers); parental care: none.
