Characters
Moderately elongate and moderately slender, with tubular eyes and a moderately long, saberlike tooth in each palatine. Snout is low and rounded. Body at anal fin origin is 13.6% to 17.3%, head length is 21.6% to 26.5%, and interorbital width is 0.8% to 2% of SL. Some teeth in jaws and palatine are barbed. Anteriormost palatine tooth is 4.6% to 7.3% of SL. Teeth in lower jaw are biserial. Eye is directed dorsally. Horizontal eye diameter is considerably greater than interorbital width. Aperture diameter of adipose eyelid is considerably greater than eye lens diameter. Frontal canal commissure has six pores. Pectoral fin rays number 11 or 12. Dorsal fin originates anterior to pelvic fin base and has 27 to 29 rays. Anal fin originates posterior to dorsal fin base and has 27 to 29 rays. Vertebrae number 49 or 50.
Color is light brown, with numerous melanophores scattered over head and body and with brassy iridescent coloration overlying dermal pigmentation on cheek and flank. White glistening spot is located on side of eye.
Distribution
Off Bermuda, the southeast coast of the United States, the Gulf of Mexico, the Bahamas, the Caribbean Sea, and off the northern coast of South America.

Habitat Associations
Tropical to subtropical seas worldwide, generally captured below 400 m, mostly between 500 and 800 m, but occasionally in the upper 200 m. Larvae and small juveniles are most frequently taken in the upper 50 to 100 m.
Biology
Food consists of midwater fishes.
Maximum known size is 127 mm SL.
Mesopelagic at 0-800 m (Ref. 58302). Oviparous, with planktonic larvae (Ref. 36017).
Reproductive mode: true hermaphroditism; fertilization: external; nonguarders. Oviparous (Ref. 36017).
