Characters
Moderately fusiform and tapered posteriorly, with two dorsal fins and an abdominal light organ, but without a chin barbel. Snout is moderately blunt and rounded. Mouth is moderately oblique and extends to posterior margin of orbits. Teeth in jaws are large and irregular in size, and arranged in two or three rows in upper jaw and in one or two rows in lower jaw. Vomer lacks teeth. Gill rakers are short and spiny, and number 3 or 4 on epibranch and 4 to 10 on lower limb. Head length is 18% to 24%, predorsal length is 25% to 29.5%, preanal length is 27.4% to 31.4%, and body depth is 18.3% to 25% of SL. Snout length is 24.4% to 33%, upper jaw length is 46.9% to 58.2%, orbit diameter is 21% to 24.8%, and caudal peduncle depth is 12% to 15% of head length. Pectoral fin extends beyond anal fin origin and has 25 to 26 rays. First dorsal fin is short based and has 9 to 11 rays. Second dorsal fin originates immediately behind first and has 54 to 61 rays. Pelvic fins are widely separated and located anterior to pectoral fin base, with outer 2 rays filamentous and extending beyond anal fin origin. Anal fin is not notched and has 63 to 66 rays. Caudal fin is rounded. Scales are small and number 81 to 88 from opercular flap to caudal fin base, and 6 or 7 from second dorsal fin base to lateral line. Light organ is circular and closer to anus than to line connecting anterior rays of pelvic fins. Vertebrae number 49 to 51.
Color is pale tan, with abdominal area bluish, and gular region and branchiostegal membrane dark brown.
