Elongate and attenuated body; large, terminal mouth; long chin barbel; long leading rays of dorsal, pectoral, and pelvic fins; snout moderately acute and slightly concave anterior to eye; jaws reach almost to posterior margin of orbit; premaxilla with short ascending process and slightly protrusible; head firm, not cavernous, about 20% of TL; snout length 28% to 30%, orbit 18% to 27%, premaxilla length 52% to 57%, chin barbel 66% to 87%, body depth at dorsal fin origin 80% to 91% of head length; jaw teeth very small, in wide bands in premaxilla and narrow bands in dentaries; first gill slit unrestricted; gill rakers lathlike, 4 to 6 on epibranch and 18 to 21 on lower limb of first arch; first dorsal fin with 10 to 13 rays, first ray splintlike, second ray smooth, spinous, and greatly elongated; second dorsal fin originates close to insertion of first dorsal fin, with longer rays than anal fin; pelvic fin with 8 rays, first 2 rays greatly elongated; scales lack spinules, cover head except for gular and branchiostegal membranes; abdominal area lacks naked area and light organ anterior to anus; swim bladder with four retia mirabilia, lacks drumming muscles; pectoral fin with 22 to 27 rays, of moderate length except second ray
