Characters
Elongate and attenuated body; large, terminal mouth; long chin barbel; long leading rays of dorsal, pectoral, and pelvic fins; snout moderately acute and nearly straight to slightly concave; jaws reach nearly to posterior margin of eye; premaxilla has short ascending process and is only slightly protrusible; head firm, not cavernous, and 15% to 20% of TL; snout 22.6% to 27.3%, orbit 26.8% to 31.6%, premaxilla length 51.6% to 56.3%, barbel length 83.9% to 103.2%, and body depth at origin of dorsal fin 67.7% to 85.3% of head length; jaw teeth very small and in broad band in premaxilla and in narrow band in lower jaw; first gill slit unrestricted; gill rakers lathlike, 4 or 5 on epibranch and 20 or 21 on lower limb of first arch; pectoral fin has 19 or 20 rays and is moderately long; first dorsal fin has 12 or 13 rays, first of which is splintlike and second, spinous and slightly longer than remainder; second dorsal fin very close to insertion of first dorsal fin and has longer rays than anal fin; pelvic fin has 8 rays, with first ray elongated; scales lack spinules and cover head except for gular and branchiostegal membranes; abdominal area lacks naked area and light organ; swim bladder has four retia mirabilia and lacks drumming muscles.
