Characters
Elongate and attenuated body; large, terminal mouth; long chin barbel; long leading rays of dorsal, pectoral, and pelvic fins; snout moderately acute and straight to slightly concave; jaws reach almost to posterior margin of orbit; premaxilla has short ascending process and is only slightly protrusible; head firm, not cavernous, and about 15% of TL; snout length 26% to 29%, orbit 23% to 28%, premaxilla length 53% to 60%, chin barbel 32% to 40%, and body depth at first dorsal fin origin 66% to 77% of head length; jaw teeth very small and in bands in both jaws; first gill slit unrestricted; gill rakers lathlike, 6 to 8 on epibranch and 27 to 29 on lower limb; pectoral fin has 14 to 16 rays and is relatively short, except second ray is greatly elongated; first dorsal fin has 9 to 11 rays, first of which is splintlike and second, slender, spinous, and greatly elongated; second dorsal fin very close to insertion of first dorsal fin and has longer rays than anal fin; pelvic fin has 8 rays, with first ray greatly elongated; scales lack spinules and cover head except for gular and branchiostegal membranes; abdominal area lacks naked area and light organ anterior to anus; swim bladder has four retia mirabilia and lacks drumming muscles.
Brownish, with membranes of mouth and gill chambers brown to black; gill lamellae have dark median stripe.
