Characters
Predorsal stripe distinct and broad; no dark bands on sides; median fins without large black spots near their bases (Hubbs et al. 2008).
Dorsal fins 9 (rarely 10; Hubbs et al. 2008).
Dorsal fin origin well behind anal fin origin (Hubbs et al. 2008
Distal segments of anterior branch of 4th fin ray of gonopodium not coalesced to elbow; spines at tip of 3rd anal fin ray of male gonopodium 4-10 times longer than wide (Hubbs et al. 2008).
Intestinal canal short with few convolutions (Hubbs et al. 2008).
Distribution
: : Restricted to the headwaters of San Felipe Creek, a 15-km tributary of the Rio Grande in the city of Del Rio (Val Verde County; Hubbs et al. 2008).
Abundance/Conservation Status
Special Concern (Hubbs et al. 2008). Listed as Endangered by the American Fisheries Society; categories of threats: present or threatened destruction, modification, or reduction of habitat or range; and a narrowly restricted range (Jelks et al. 2008).
Habitat Associations
Seems to prefer thermally-consistent spring flows (Hubbs et al. 2008).
Apparently most common in edge habitats adjacent to flowing waters (Hubbs et al. 2008).
Phylogeny and Morphologically Similar Fishes
Gambusia clarkhubbsi is a member of the nobilis species group; occurs sympatrically with the Tex-Mex gambusia (G. speciosa; Hubbs et al. 2008).
