Characters

Relatively slender bodied and moderately compressed, with relatively large scales. Snout does not protrude beyond maxillary symphysis. Gill rakers on first arch number 18 to 22. Pectoral fin has 13 to 15 rays. Dorsal fin consists of five or six semi-isolated spines and 13 to 15 rays. Anal fin has four or five semi-isolated spines and 7 to 9 rays. Pelvic fin has 1 spinous ray and 5 or 6 rays. Lateral line scales number 28. Vertebrae number 28 or 29.
Color is black.

Distribution

Western Atlantic Ocean from the east coast of Florida to northern South America, including the Gulf of Mexico, the Bahamas, and the Greater Antilles.

Habitat Associations

Benthic to bathypelagic between 300 and 1,000 m
Prejuveniles are epipelagic in oceanic waters

Biology

Food consists of calanoid copepods for prejuveniles, and gammarid and hyperiid amphipods and calanoid and harpacticoid copepods for juveniles and adults
Maximum known size is 92 mm SL
Maturity is reached at about 81 mm SL
Kasidoron, once given family status as Kasidoridae, is the larva of this species (Ref. 6993). Adults found at depths of 320 - 1,100 meters and larvae at 0 - 50 meters (Ref. 51655). Feeds on amphipods and copepods (Ref. 37039).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC), assessed 2018-10-09.
