Characters

Elongate, slender, and compressed posteriorly, with narrowly rectangular lateral line scales, cavernous tissue anterior to anal fin, and dorsal fin extending slightly beyond anal fin. Head straight in dorsal profile, snout moderately acute. Jaw teeth elongate, close-set, and in distinct longitudinal rows. Vomer has three transverse series of teeth forming triangle. Palatine has undulating series of teeth. Ventral midline of gill arches has single shield-shaped tooth plate (copular tooth plate). Eye very small and lacks lens. First gill arch has solid, flat tooth plate covering most of lateral face of arch. Three free gill arches are present; slit is lacking behind fourth arch. Head length is 32% to 33%, snout length is 12.5%, upper jaw length is 29.3%, lower jaw length is 27.8%, interorbital width is 10.7%, body depth is 24% to 25.9%, snout to dorsal fin origin is 62% to 71.7%, dorsal fin base length is 17.6% to 24%, snout to anal fin origin is 70.5%, and anal fin base length is 15.7% to 23 % of SL. Pectoral fin originates below posterior margin of operculum and has 16 to 19 rays. Dorsal fin has 17 rays, and anal fin has 17 rays. Trunk lateral line consists of broad tubes pierced by 14 or 15 pores, with pointed flap extending from anterior margin of pores. Flaps increase in size posteriorly until they completely cover pores on caudal peduncle. Cavernous tissue is present under pectoral fin, posterior to cleithrum, and around anus. Vertebrae number 47 to 56.
