Characters

Body shape: short and / or deep. This species of the H. aculeatus complex is distinguished by having a relatively strong and sharp tubercles on dorsal part of body; both inner and outer sphenotic tubercles are well developed; a row of tubercles almost always present dorsal to orbit; trifid principal tubercles on disk margin with anterior spinelet enlarged; dense arrangement of tubercles on the tail (Ref. 85070).

Distribution

Western Central Atlantic: southern coast of USA and throughout Gulf of Mexico.

Habitat Associations

Marine. reef-associated. depth range 100-400 m.

Biology

Most specimens are taken less than 100 m (Ref. 85070).
Max length: 9.9 cm SL.
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC), assessed 2014-09-16. Resilience: High.
