Characters

Body shape: fusiform / normal. Body sub-oval and compressed; both jaws with a single row of small, comb-like teeth; pectoral fins falcate and relatively long (from 2.5 to 3.0 times in total length); back silvery blue; belly and flanks white or silvery; pectoral fins yellowish (Ref. 55763).

Distribution

Eastern Pacific: southern tip of Baja California, Mexico and southern Gulf of California to Ecuador.

Habitat Associations

Brackish, marine. benthopelagic.

Adults are found in coastal waters, also entering brackish waters (Ref. 9283). Usually forming schools (Ref. 37955). Marketed fresh and salted or dried (Ref. 9283).
