Characters

Moderately elongate, slender, and compressed, with an acute snout and a forked caudal fin. Snout length is slightly less than eye length and is 7.7% of SL. Head length is 35% of SL. Upper jaw extends considerably posterior to orbit. Small teeth occur in premaxilla, maxilla, and dentaries. Premaxilla also has prominent, forwardly directed tooth (tusk). Symphysis of lower jaw lacks horizontal spine, but anterior part of lower jaw has series of forwardly directed teeth. First gill arch has 15 or 16 gill rakers on lower limb and 6 or 7 on epibranch. Branchiostegal rays number 8. Pectoral fin is low on flank, short, and has 16 to 20 rays. Dorsal fin originates posterior to pelvic fin insertion and has 18 to 20 rays. Pelvic fin is inserted on belly posterior to midlength and has 9 rays. Anal fin originates at about midlength of dorsal fin base and has 15 to 17 rays. Body is covered with small scales, with 94 to 104 in lateral series. Lateral line scales are similar to other scales. Photophores are present on body. Two whitish bodies occur on posterior rim of orbit separated by distance equal to diameter of lower body.
Color is dark except for light color of photophores.
