Moderately slender and compressed; relatively short mouth; anal fin base distinctly longer than dorsal fin base; snout moderately blunt; jaws extend to posterior margin of orbit; maxilla broadly expanded posteriorly; operculum truncated posteriorly; gill rakers 19-21; dorsal fin originates over pelvic fin base with 13-15 rays; pectoral fin extends to AOax with 15 or 16 rays; anal fin originates under posterior end of dorsal fin with 20-22 rays; Dn, Vn, and Suo present; PVOi, PVO2, and PO in straight line; PLO closer to upper end of pectoral fin base than to lateral line; 5 PO; VLO within its diameter below lateral line; 4 VO; SAO form obtuse angle with SAO1 anterior to VO, and SAO3 posterior to anal fin origin and in contact with lateral line; Poli anterior to last AOa; Pol2 in contact with lateral line; AOa number 6-8; AOp number 5-7 with 2 over anal fin base; 2 Prc separated from AOp series; Prc2 about one-half its diameter below lateral line; males have single, small, heart-shaped supracaudal luminous gland; females have one or two small lanceolate infracaudal patches

Oceanic and mesopelagic (Ref. 4066), found between 600-800 m during the day, nyctoepipelagic at surface and down to 300 m (Ref. 4479). Reach sexual maturity at 5.8 cm (Ref. 47377).
