Characters

Moderately fusiform and tapered posteriorly, with two dorsal fins and a short chin barbel, but no abdominal light organ. Snout is moderately blunt and slightly convex. Mouth is terminal, but upper jaw slightly overhangs lower jaw. Chin barbel is shorter than eye diameter. Jaws extend to about midlength of orbits. Upper jaw has outer row of enlarged canine teeth and two or three inner rows of villiform teeth. Lower jaw has two rows of cardiform teeth, with those of outer row larger than those of inner row. Vomer has small oval patch of cardiform teeth. Operculum has single flat spine on upper posterior margin. Gill rakers are rather long and slender, and number 3 to 6 on epibranch and 10 to 13 on lower limb. Head length is 18.8% to 26.7%, snout length is 4.5% to 8.2%, lower jaw length is 7.7% to 12.7%, orbit diameter is 5.2% to 8.9%, predorsal length is 21.1% to 28.9%, preanal length is 35% to 56.5%, and body depth is 13.8% to 38.1%, and caudal peduncle depth is 1.7% to 3.6% of SL. Pectoral fin has 19 to 23 rays. First dorsal fin is short and has 6 (rarely 7) rays, first of which is beneath skin and second is longest. Second dorsal fin originates immediately behind first, has 57 to 63 rays, and lacks notch. Pelvic fins are widely separated, originate anterior to pectoral fin base, and have 2 elongated rays that fail to reach anus and 2 or 3 short rays beneath skin. Anal fin lacks notch and has 54 to 63 rays. Caudal fin is slightly rounded. Lateral line scales number 128 to 140, and scales between second dorsal fin base and lateral line number 12 to 15. Vertebrae number 50 to 56, with 13 to 15 trunk, and 37 to 42 caudal vertebrae.
Color is pale tan, with dorsal and anal fins edged with black.
