Characters
Relatively slender and compressed, large mouth, dorsal and anal fin bases of equal length. Snout moderately blunt. Jaws extend about eye diameter beyond posterior margin of orbit, maxilla not expanded posteriorly. Posterior margin of operculum tapers to acute angle above PLO. Gill rakers number 13 to 15. Dorsal fin originates slightly in advance of pelvic fin base and has 14 or 15 rays. Pectoral fin extends to VO or VO and has 15 to 17 rays. Anal fin originates posterior to dorsal fin base and has 13 to 15 rays. Vn is small. PVOj is slightly anterior to PVO. PLO is closer to lateral line than to pectoral fin base. Five PO are present, with PO highly elevated and above PO. VLO is closer to lateral line than to pelvic fin base. VO number four or five. SAO form slight angle, with SAO posterior to last VO and about mid-distant between this photophore and SAO. SAO is anterior to anal fin base and within its diameter below lateral line. Pol is within its diameter below lateral line. AOa number five to seven, and AOp number two and are behind anal fin base. Three Prc are separated from AOp series, and Prc is at level of lateral line.
Supracaudal and infracaudal luminous glands are large, bordered with black pigment, and present in both sexes.

Tropical to subtropical waters worldwide, daytime depths range from 425 to 850 m, and nighttime depths range from 40 to 225 m

Maximum known size is 180 mm SL
Maturity is reached at about 150 mm SL
Oceanic and mesopelagic. Found between 425-850 m during the day and in the upper 100 m at night. Small specimens found in the upper 50 m (night).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC), assessed 2012-07-10. Resilience: Medium (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
