Characters

Females are short and moderately deep, with a branched hyoid barbel; head spines, tooth patterns, body proportions, fin ray counts, and subdermal pigmentation as in L. brevibarbatus; hyoid barbel divided near base into five main branches and is less than 60% of SL; anterior median branch bifurcated, with proximal branch nearly as long as main stem and bearing posterior series of side branches; anterior pair of main branches bifurcated nearly to base, with bifurcations of about equal length; one branch of each anterior pair of main branches bears number of side branches; intermediary unpaired main branch bifurcated, with bifurcations of about equal length, one bifurcation with anteroventral series of side branches, and other bifurcation prolonged into one or more filamentous branches; posterior main branch has series of five to eight side branches, with proximal branch longer than others; all barbel branches distally divided into several filaments bearing photophores; esca is large and has single distal appendage of about 16% to 39% of SL.
Photophores are present in transparent tips and filamentous prolongations of barbel branches.
