Compressed, moderately deep bodied, and relatively elongate, with snout produced into long tube, body plates on flank, and relatively short second dorsal spine. Body depth is 22.4% to 24.9% (x = 23.2%), snout length is 34.5% to 37.8% (x = 36%), and second dorsal spine is 20.9% to 28.9% (x = 24.5%) of SL. Pectoral fin has 12 to 14 rays. First dorsal fin is separated from second dorsal fin and has six to eight spines. Second dorsal fin has 10 or 11 rays. Anal fin originates under first dorsal fin, has 17 to 19 rays, and base length is slightly more than twice as long as second dorsal fin base. Caudal fin has a slightly concave margin.
Color is silvery in juveniles, with back darker. Adults are pinkish to reddish on upper side and silvery ventrally.
