Biology

Adults occur frequently in ditches and inundated fields. Common in summer months when it is collected from dried-up beds of tanks, beels, bheries and others. Found most commonly in standing or sluggish waters of lakes, reservoirs or canals (Ref. 12693). Feed on aquatic insects and fishes (Ref. 12693). A high-prized fish and sold fresh.
Max length: 20.0 cm TL.
Reproductive mode: dioecism; fertilization: external; nonguarders (open water/substratum egg scatterers); parental care: none. Produces up to 300 eggs.
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC), assessed 2009-10-12. Resilience: High (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
