North America: Susquehanna River, New York to James River, Virginia, USA; Great Lakes basin, New York in USA, and Ontario in Canada to Michigan, USA; Ohio River basin in New York to eastern Illinois and south to northern Georgia and Alabama except absent in southwestern Indiana, western 2/3 of Kentucky, and most of western Tennessee, USA. Introduced in Ottawa River system in Ontario; also present and possibly introduced in upper Santee River in North Carolina, Savannah River in South Carolina and Georgia, and Coosa River in Georgia.

Habitat Associations

Freshwater. demersal. Found in: streams.

Biology

Inhabits rocky runs and flowing pools of small to medium rivers (Ref. 86798). Oviparous (Ref. 205).
Max length: 33.0 cm TL; common length: 13.5 cm TL; max age: 5 years.
Reproductive mode: dioecism; fertilization: external; nonguarders (brood hiders); parental care: none.
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC), assessed 2012-03-01. Resilience: Medium (tm=3; tmax=5;).
