Common throughout eastern part of range, rare in western areas (absent in lower Wabash, lower Cumberland, and most of lower Tennessee River drainages); rare in Lake Erie drainage.

Freshwater. benthopelagic. Found in: streams.

Inhabits rocky runs and riffles of small to large rivers (Ref. 5723, 10294).
