Characters
Moderately elongate and moderately slender, with non-tubular eyes and a moderately long, saberlike tooth in each palatine. Snout is relatively high and truncate. Body depth at anal fin origin is 13.5% to 17%, head length is 19.7% to 24.7%, and interorbital width is 3.6% to 5.2% of SL. Some lower jaw and palatine teeth are barbed. Anteriormost palatine tooth is 5.3% to 6.9% of SL. Lower jaw teeth are biserial. Eye is directed laterally. Horizontal diameter of eye is considerably greater than interorbital width. Aperture diameter of adipose eyelid is considerably less than eye lens diameter. Frontal canal commissure has six pores. Pectoral fin rays number 11 to 13. Dorsal fin originates anterior to pelvic fin base and has 11 to 13 rays. Anal fin originates posterior to dorsal fin base and has 30 to 35 rays. Vertebrae number 48 to 52.
Color is dark brown, with brassy iridescent coloration overlying head and flank. No white glistening spot is found on side of eye.
Distribution
Off the east coast of the United States, from the Gulf of Mexico, the Bahamas, the Caribbean Sea, and off the northeast coast of South America.

Biology
Food consists of midwater fishes.
Maximum known size is 123 mm SL.
Mesopelagic at ca. 100-1000 m (Ref. 58302). Larvae (<3 cm SL) and small juveniles are frequently caught in the upper 50 or 100 m. Most adults are usually taken from depths exceeding 400 m but often between 100-400 m (Ref. 4763). Feeds on other midwater fishes. Synchronous hermaphrodites (Ref. 4478).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC), assessed 2013-05-15. Resilience: Medium (Assuming tmax>3).
