Characters
Moderately elongate, with a reduced, blunt, stiff tail. Snout moderately tapered and projects slightly beyond lower jaw. Upper and lower lips have flanges, and upper flange is wide. Anterior nostril is tubular and located near tip of snout. Posterior nostril is anterior to midheight of eye. Snout is 10% to 22%, eye is 18% to 22%, and mouth length is 30% to 38% of head length. Head length is 16% to 18%, predorsal length is 18% to 22%, and preanal length is 39% to 46% of TL. Jaw teeth are small, acute, and in two to several rows, with outer row forming cutting edge. Intermaxillary tooth patch is square and separated from maxillary and vomerine teeth. Vomerine teeth are in short patch, about equally as broad as it is long. Head pores are very small, with three infraorbital, five supraorbital, and three supratemporal. Branchiostegal rays number 9 or 10, pectoral fin rays number 12, and lateral line pores to anus number 40 to 43. Total vertebrae number 121 to 127, predorsal vertebrae number 11 to 13, and preanal vertebrae number 44 to 45.
Color is brown to gray and slightly lighter ventrally, with vertical fins dark edged. Stomach and intestine are pale.
Distribution
Western North Atlantic from Bermuda, southeastern Florida, the Bahamas, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea.

Captured from the surface to 70 m
Biology
Maximum known size is 461 mm TL
Occurs in neritic waters of the continental shelf; not observed around oceanic islands (Ref. 5217). Found on muddy and sandy bottoms (Ref. 5217).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC), assessed 2011-08-15. Resilience: Medium (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
