Head is short, narrow, and depressed; snout very long; rostral projection slightly to moderately laterally oriented; rostral and nasal spines absent; perifacial rim very narrow, terminating as a narrow, posteriorly directed spine; lip barbels 5, arranged in two clusters of 2 and 3; chin barbels 26-36, arranged in seven clusters; gill rakers 2-3 on upper limb, 1 in corner, 19-26 on lower limb; measurements (% SL): head length 34%-36%, head depth 13%-15%, rostral projection length 14%-17%, snout length 17%-19%, mandibular barbel length 11%-17%, orbit length 7%-8%, interorbital width 7%-9%, pectoral fin length 20%-25%, first free pectoral fin ray length 19%-22%, body depth 12%-16%; joined pectoral fin rays 12; first dorsal fin VIII spines, second dorsal fin 20 rays; anal fin 20-21 rays; scutes in dorsal series 28-29, supramedian series 30-32, inframedian series 26, ventral series 23; bicuspid spines in supramedian series 6-9

Distribution
Western Atlantic from Virginia to Suriname, including the Gulf of Mexico
Occurs off Texas and in the Bay of Campeche

Outer continental shelf between 74 and 146 m; depth range 29-475 m
Biology
Maximum known size is about 200 mm SL
Found mostly on the continental slope. Neither anterolateral glandular groove nor venom gland is present (Ref. 57406).
Reproductive mode: dioecism; fertilization: external; nonguarders (open water/substratum egg scatterers); parental care: none.
