Distribution

Asia: Pakistan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Thailand (Ref. 4832). Occurs in the upper Mekong, Salween, Irrawaddy, Meklong and upper Chao Phraya basins (Ref. 43281).

Habitat Associations

Freshwater, brackish. benthopelagic. Found in: streams, lakes.

Biology

Found in still, shallow, marginal waters of tanks and rivers, mostly with muddy bottoms. They browse close to the substrate in shallow water. Feed on crustaceans, insects and plankton. About 150 eggs are laid in batches of about 20 at a time; eggs hatch in about a day, and fry are free-swimming the next day. Aquarium keeping: in groups of 5 or more individuals; minimum aquarium size 60 cm (Ref. 51539).
Max length: 12.5 cm TL.
Reproductive mode: dioecism; fertilization: external; nonguarders (open water/substratum egg scatterers); parental care: none. Assumed to be like Barbus conchonius.
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC), assessed 2010-03-22. Resilience: High (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
