Characters
Moderately elongate and moderately slender, with pelvic fins longer than pectoral fins. Snout slightly longer than eye diameter. Body depth 10.9% to 16.2%, head length 18.9% to 21.8%, and snout length 7.8% to 9.3% of SL. Premaxilla with 30 to 69 teeth. Lower jaw with 17 to 39 teeth in lateral row and 6 to 8 larger teeth in medial row. Palatine with 8 to 13 teeth, and tongue with 8 to 16 teeth. Pectoral fin inserts just below midflank and has 20 to 22 rays. Dorsal fin originates over pelvic fin insertion and has 7 or 8 rays. Anal fin rays number 24 to 27. Lateral line scales number 50 to 52. Vertebrae number 48 to 50.
Dermal pigment forming stripe below lateral line from pelvic fin to caudal peduncle. Stripe increases in width posteriorly. Bases of anterior dorsal fin rays weakly pigmented, and lower lobe of caudal fin strongly pigmented. Peritoneum black. Larvae have various pigment patterns including single peritoneal section, paired peritoneal pigment sections, mid-ventral spot behind last anal ray, mid-dorsal spot behind adipose fin, slashlike bar at fork of caudal fin, and intestinal spot midventrally behind anus.
Distribution
Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea in the western Atlantic
Habitat Associations
Tropical seas worldwide; adults most numerous between 300 and 500 m at night and below 500 m during the day
Adolescents most abundant between 100 and 200 m, and larvae generally captured in less than 100 m
Biology
Maximum known size is 122 mm SL
Oceanic and mesopelagic (Ref. 6601, 75154). Adults have usually been taken in hauls at depths between 300 to 800 m; most larvae in hauls to depths between 0 to 200 m. Most records in all areas are from localities near continental or insular land masses. Synchronous hermaphrodites (Ref. 10755).
