Characters

Very slender, subcylindrical to slightly compressed and tapering gradually to tail, with dorsal fin originating posterior to anus. Lower jaw extends slightly beyond upper jaw. Maxillary teeth are in two to four rows, with inner teeth largest. Mandibular teeth are in three to five rows, with inner row consisting of small teeth isolated from remainder, next row consisting of largest teeth, and outer row possessing small irregular teeth. Vomerine teeth are in two alternating rows of enlarged, erect, and laterally compressed teeth, and each tooth is 3 to 4 times as long as it is wide. Anterior tips of first four or five branchiostegal rays extend beyond their articulation with hyoid arch. Snout length is 36% to 40%, eye is 4% to 7%, and mouth length is 37% to 50% of head length. Head length is 11% to 17%, predorsal length is 27% to 34%, preanal length is 22% to 28%, and depth at anal fin origin is 0.9% to 2.5% of TL. Dorsal fin rays number 136 to 175, and anal fin rays number 119 to 156. Total vertebrae number 154 to 162, predorsal vertebrae number 27 to 31, preanal vertebrae number 20 to 22, and precaudal vertebrae number 77 to 103. Adults undergo metamorphosis in dentition, orbit diameter, and jaw structure.
Color is brown to black, with iridescent silvery surface.

Distribution

In the western Atlantic it occurs from New England to Suriname, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea

Juveniles are located between 550 and 1,000 m, and subadults and adults occur in the lower section of the mesopelagic realm

Food consists of euphausiids, shrimps, other crustaceans, and small fishes
