Characters
Elongate and attenuated body, short snout, compressed body, short abdomen; snout blunt and slightly acute with strong, terminal, scutelike scale; jaws short, subterminal; head about 15% of TL; snout length 29% to 31%, orbit 31% to 34%, premaxilla length 29% to 32%, chin barbel 19% to 26%, body depth at first dorsal fin origin 94% to 107% of head length; jaws with band of small, pointed teeth; first gill slit greatly restricted; gill rakers tuberculate, 7 to 9 on first arch; branchiostegal rays 7; pectoral fin with 18 to 22 rays; first dorsal fin with 12 or 13 rays, first ray splintlike, second ray strongly serrated and spinous; second dorsal fin distinctly separated from first, with shorter rays than anal fin; pelvic fin with 11 rays, first ray slightly elongated; abdomen lacks naked area and light organ anterior to anus; anus and urogenital openings surrounded by broad naked black area (periproct) and located well anterior to anal fin origin; scales densely covered with spinules arranged in parallel rows; head fully scaled except for ventral side of snout, and gular and branchiostegal membranes; swim bladder with two retia mirabilia.

Closely related to S. hirundo (eastern Atlantic) and S. pumiliceps (Indian Ocean). A more thorough study using adequate numbers of specimens should be done to distinguish the three.
